Please join Megan Nicolay at Housing Works Bookstore this Thursday November 10, 2011 to help celebrate the launch of The Burdastyle Sewing Handbook by Nora Abousteit and Alison Kelly (co-founder and creative director at BurdaStyle/ former Project Runway contestant, respectively).

She’ll be without her trusty scissors and T-shirts, but instead representing iLoveToCreate and wielding a mean set of Tulip glitter tattoo materials — all the better to “ink” you with, my dears! But even if you don’t want the tattoo, come for to meet the BurdaStyle team, the book contributors (I bet they’ll even sign a book if you ask them nicely!), and some of your favorite DIY bloggers and craft personalities. But there’s more: Check out the Singer Make-and-Take Lounge, the photobooth, Spoonflower fabrics — or hey, just enjoy the wine, beer, and hors d’oeuvres!

Sharpen your scissors, folks! (Okay, don’t worry about the scissors, we’ll provide them — and sharpen them, too.) Just pack an old T-shirt that you want to freshen up, and come to the free T-shirt refashioning event at The Duplex in NYC’s West Village on Tuesday October 18, 2011 from 7 to 9 pm! Megan will teach two designs from her books Generation T and Generation T: Beyond Fashion (and if the time allows, a bonus look, too!). Scissors and any other necessary tools will be provided, books will be for sale (get them signed!), and drinks (also for sale!) will be served by the talented Matthew Fletcher. It is officially summer (read: T-shirt season!), so nothing could make us happier than to hear about all the summertime T-shirt snipping events in the pipeline all over the country. Here’s one that’s happening in Chicago this Sunday June 26, 2011 from noon to 5 pm–it’s Pumping Station: One’s “Summer T-shirt Hackathon”! Participants are invited to bring old T-shirts (or new ones–as long as they’re not getting used in their current form, they’re fair game!) and learn how to transform them into a stuffed animal, a throw pillow, or a new piece for the wardrobe. No need to fear sewing, since there are plenty of no-sew projects to tackle, too. The event is being hosted at Pumping Station: One, a nonprofit hacker space populated by a community of folks dedicated to exploring the intersection of technology, art, science, and culture, and in cooperation with Learnapalooza.

Though not an official Generation T-sponsored event, we get so giddy when folks start throwing public parties to cut up their T-shirts that we wanted to share it with the larger T-shirt community — and hey, it appears that copies of Generation T: Beyond Fashion will be on hand for reference. You know how much we love Maker Faires, so though Megan Nicolay is only able to be there in spirit for this one, Generation T will be there in the flesh…err, paper pulp…err, the crafty minds and nimble fingers of crafty readers Janet Kennedy and Kelly Farrow. This Saturday (June 18, 2011) Janet and Kelly and their team of intrepid recyclers will be using inspiration from Megan’s books, Generation T and Generation T: Beyond Fashion as they demonstrate how to take an ordinary T-shirt and re-purpose it into a T-shirt (or tank top, or pillow, or…) with style and flair! They’ll bring a box of tossed out T-shirts so that visitors may do their own “re-make & take” on the spot for $5. Proceeds of the creativity sale will benefit nonprofit organizations supported by 5 Bucks is Change. Most projects will be no-sew, but Kelly’s bringing her machine, so some light sewing will take place–brace yourselves!

If you’re in the area, please stop by the Tee Party to say hello to to Janet and Kelly and do some tee-cycling!–and pick up a free Generation T project card while you’re at it.

Please stop by Bayswater Book Co. on the lake in Center Harbor, New Hampshire on Saturday, March 12 for a good ole fashioned Generation T Tee Party! I’ll be signing books, demonstrating two projects from Generation T: Beyond Fashion (don’t forget to pack a T-shirt or two so you can follow along!) and hey–maybe I’ll even bake cookies for you, too.

As some of you may have already heard, I’ll be in town for the artist in residency program at Holderness School — and I’m so excited to be able to squeeze in a visit to one of my favorite indie bookstores. (Here’s a photo from my trip there back in 2007, for a Tee Party with Generation T: 108 Ways to Transform a T-shirt.) Growing up in the Granite State, Bayswater was one of my local bookstores, and it holds a very special place in my heart. Not only do I visit the store often (whenever I’m back visiting family!), but my favorite summer job in high school was that of “story lady” at Bayswater. Once a week I selected a general theme and selected books from the shelves of the bookstore to share with the kids and have a discussion (future book club members, for sure!).

Because there’s nothing quite like March in New England, I’m heading north with Generation T to spend quality time with some creative teenagers at Holderness School as part of an artist-in-residency program called Artward Bound (like Outward Bound, but with art!). I’ll be sharing the time and space with eight other artists, who are all working around the central theme: Re-make it New. According to the mission and description of the 2011 program, we will “explore and celebrate…invention and resourcefulness. Re-source, re-use, re-make, re-balance, re-mix, reflect are the keywords that allow us to effectively tap the past, within the present, in order to construct a creative and sustainable future. Artists and performers of every kind are confronted with the daily challenge of making something new out of what is before them. It is said, ‘Necessity is the mother of invention.’ Never has that been more true, than in the eco-era of today. Invention is the ability to bring dissimilar ideas, tools, experience, and materials together in ways that surprise, instruct and lead.” That sure sounds all right to me!

Though the daytime class sessions are private, the evening performances are open to the community (including two eco-fashion shows premiering my students’ T-shirt refashion work) , and I’ll be posting more information about them as it becomes available. In the meantime, we’ll be sure to post plenty of pictures to share our progress throughout the two weeks that we get creative together!

Each winter, sunny California is host to the largest craft convention in the biz, organized by the Craft & Hobby Association. Though I’m not participating in any formal events this year, I will be happily roaming the aisles on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday (January 29, 30, and 31), stopping in to some of my favorite booths (like iLovetoCreate, Prym Consumer USA, ProvoCraft, SewNews…) and catching up with some of my favorite crafty folks (Sonya Nimri, Jenny Doh, Cathie Filian, Kathy Cano-Murillo, Mark Montano, and more!). Check this out! Forget Carson, Conan, and Colbert. Megan Nicolay and Generation T and a pile of T-shirts will be making an appearance this December on Talk Show, a new live “reality” improv performance at Grand Opening/Studio 139 hosted by Ellen Reeves, author of the book Can I Wear my Nose Ring to the Interview? The show runs from November 12 to December 22, 2010 with a new and different lineup every night! And, nestled right in the middle of December will be an appearance by Megan Nicolay and who-knows-who-else (it’s a surprise!).

Come see Megan Nicolay and Generation T at the inaugural World Maker Faire , a DIY Festival of Creativity and Innovation, in New York City at the NY Hall of Science in Queens. She’ll be participating in the Workman booth’s “Camp Make,” where you can stop by throughout the day to take part in a variety of DIY fun: make fashion, make music, make explosions, make puppets, make yourself smarter, make robot art, make a difference, and make other totally cool stuff. Stay tuned for a schedule of events!
