I loved this video, but I was hoping to see how you made that awesome scarf you’re wearing. I’ve seen those in the stores lately and I was wondering how hard they would be to make. Any chance of getting a few tips on making one?

Hi Allison, Glad you asked! We were going to include that tutorial on that Threadbanger episode, too, but ran out of time. The scarf’s a project in my new book (so you can check it out there), but we may include it in the next video tute, so stay tuned!

Yay! I can’t wait to get a copy of you new book! For a friend’s wedding coming up, we are using the t shirt blanket idea from you last book. Friends of the bride and groom are going to be writing personal messages on their fave t shirts and we’re (the bride’s friends) are going to be turning those t’s into a blanket for the newlywed’s bed.

Hey Megan….great tutorial there–I could probably make that project just from watching the video. Anyway, I came up with a variation on the Pinup Girl halter top just now. I made it the normal way, but then the top part was too baggy, and I couldn’t get the gathers just right, so I took it in a bit (by cutting and sewing rather than the “fringe and tie” method you suggested). Also, the neck hole was a little tight on me, so I had to come up with a way to re-size that too. Anyway, here’s what I did:

    1. After following the original Pinup Girl instructions, I turned the shirt inside out, then measured and cut off a few inches of excess fabric from the right seam, then pinned and sewed it up, thereby forming the new “back seam.” I just approximated how much to take off by measuring with a shirt that fit me well, but some people might prefer to use their bust measurements instead.

    2. Since the neck hole was a bit too tight for me, I cut through the top of the neck hole (which was originally the shoulder seam of the T-shirt).

    3. After that, I measured two long pieces of fabric from the piece that I cut off the back of the shirt, so they were the same width as the fabric at the top of the neck hole, and the same length as what remained of the back of the shirt.

    4. Finally, I pinned one of the strips I just cut, facing wrong side out, along each cut-open shoulder seam (which became the neck hole in the original Pinup Girl instructions). Then, I sewed on the strips to make ties for the halter top, turned the shirt right side out, and put it on.

Anyway…..I know that that probably seems obvious to you (Megan), since you’re like, a veteran of T-shirt surgery, but I thought I’d share it so that you could in turn share it with the masses of first-time DIYers out there.

I just tried this for the first time AND LOVED IT! I took one of my husbands over sized DUKE U shirts and made my own custom, fan supportive halter! It looks great and I am so glad we could put one of his MANY tee shirts to better use! Thank you again!

I love this idea, but I’m not sure I want to be quite so revealing. So what’s the best way to make the front a little higher up on the torso?
